Of the top-50 high schools in New York, 14 of them are on Long Island, according to the rankings. 
 

The rankings are based on student-teacher ratios; state proficiency test results, overall and with a particular focus on how disadvantaged students were performing; and participation rates in AP/IB programs.


According to U.S. News, Long Island’s top 20 high schools are as follows:

 9.   Herricks High School; New Hyde Park 
10.  Harborfields High School; Greenlawn
11. Paul D. Schreiber Senior High School; Port Washington
12.  Roslyn High School; Roslyn Heights
13.  Plainview Old Bethpage JFK High School; Plainview
14.  Half Hollow Hills High School West; Dix Hills
